Copacabana beach walk
Copacabana · 90 min
Four kilometers of black-and-white sidewalk from Leme to the fort, with the joggers and the footvolley before the sun gets high. A coconut from a kiosk is R$10 to R$15.
Three days in three parts: the Zona Sul beaches from Copacabana to the Arpoador rock, the Christ statue and Santa Teresa down to a samba night in Lapa, then the center, the Botanical Garden and Sugarloaf at sunset. One big ticket a day, Uber between the parts.
Got Waystop on this phone? The button drops the whole plan straight into the app. On a laptop, copy it now and paste it into Import later.
Checked October 10, 2026. That’s the day we last confirmed the hours, prices and closed days.

May to October is dry and 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C), with clear mornings for the viewpoints. December to March is 86 to 104°F (30 to 40°C) with afternoon storms, and the city fills for New Year on Copacabana and for Carnival (the five days before Ash Wednesday, early February in 2027): hotels double and the big sights sell out. April and November sit between the two.
Ipanema or Leblon for the beach on foot, the restaurants and a quiet night. Copacabana is cheaper, busier and on the metro. Botafogo is the local choice: good bars, the metro, and Sugarloaf ten minutes away. Santa Teresa is lovely and hilly; you will Uber everywhere after dark.
The metro covers Centro to Ipanema and is cleaner and faster than anything on the road (R$7.90 a ride, tap a contactless bank card at the turnstile). City buses are R$5 but now take only the Jaé card or its app; a tourist rarely needs one. Uber is the default between the parts of this plan: cheap, easy to book, and the answer whenever a walk crosses a quiet street after dark or a tunnel.
Copacabana · 90 min
Four kilometers of black-and-white sidewalk from Leme to the fort, with the joggers and the footvolley before the sun gets high. A coconut from a kiosk is R$10 to R$15.
Copacabana · 90 min
Opens at 10, Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday. R$10 in cash at the gate, free on Tuesdays; the point is the view back along the whole beach, then coffee and a pastel at the Confeitaria Colombo branch inside.
R$10
Ipanema · 75 min
Fifteen minutes on foot round the Arpoador headland. Take a kiosk table, open a tab, and order the fried fish with rice or a grilled cheese on a stick; a caipirinha is R$20 to R$30, and you should pay the tab before you leave and count the change.
Ipanema · 150 min
Rent two chairs and an umbrella for about R$40 for the afternoon and swim between the lifeguard flags; the current is stronger than it looks. Nothing of value on the sand: one card, a little cash, the phone in a sealed bag you keep on you.
Ipanema · 60 min
Rinse off, then the two streets behind the beach: the Garota de Ipanema bar for a beer where the song was written, Havaianas and swimwear shops for the gifts.
Arpoador · 75 min
Walk back to the headland and climb the rock with everybody else. The sun drops behind the Dois Irmãos peaks between 5:30 p.m. in winter and 6:45 p.m. in summer, so arrive 30 minutes before.
Leblon · 90 min
Jobi for a chopp, bolinhos de bacalhau and no reservations, at a bar that has not changed since 1956. Zazá Bistrô on Rua Joana Angélica in Ipanema is the alternative if you want a table and a proper plate; the 10 percent service is already on the bill.
Cosme Velho · 180 min
Book the first slot of the morning on tremdocorcovado.rio: tickets are timed, the Cosme Velho station does not sell same-day, and the clouds roll in from late morning. R$134 covers the 20-minute train and the statue (visitor numbers are capped while the summit is modernized); the official vans are R$132 from Copacabana or Largo do Machado, and there is no cloud refund, so if the forecast is gray, swap with day 3's garden.
R$134
Santa Teresa · 60 min
Uber from the station up the hill to Largo dos Guimarães, 15 minutes. Walk the Rua Almirante Alexandrino for the mansions, the painted walls and the view down to the bay from the bends.
Santa Teresa · 75 min
On Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno by the tram stop: feijoada on Saturdays, the black-bean pastel every day, a cold beer. Cash or card, no bookings, a line after 1:30 p.m. on weekends.
Santa Teresa · 45 min
Board the yellow bonde at Largo dos Guimarães and ride down over the top of the Lapa arches; the fare is R$20 and covers a round trip the same day. The Carioca to Largo das Neves line runs daily from about 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., every 20 to 30 minutes, with a longer wait on weekends.
R$20
Lapa · 45 min
Ten minutes on foot from the Carioca stop: 215 steps tiled by one Chilean artist over 20 years. Climb from the Lapa end on Rua Joaquim Silva; the top is quieter and the tiles from your country are somewhere in the middle.
Lapa · 60 min
The 18th-century aqueduct the tram just crossed, and the concrete cone of the cathedral beside it: go in for the four stained-glass ribs, free, open until about 17. Then an early drink at one of the bars under the arches while it is still light.
Lapa · 90 min
Two Lapa institutions on Avenida Mem de Sá: Nova Capela for the roast goat with broccoli rice, Bar Brasil for the German-Brazilian kitchen and the draught beer. Neither takes bookings; both are open late.
Lapa · 150 min
Rio Scenarium on Rua do Lavradio has three floors of antiques and a band from about 8 p.m. (cover around R$50 to R$80, more on Fridays and Saturdays); Carioca da Gema on Mem de Sá is smaller and more about the music. Uber to the door and from the door; do not walk the side streets after dark.
Centro · 45 min
The reading room on Rua Luís de Camões opens at 10, Monday to Friday only, closed weekends and holidays; free. It has three storeys of carved wood and 350,000 books, and twenty minutes is enough; take the Metro to Carioca, then five minutes on foot.
Centro · 75 min
Rua Gonçalves Dias, five minutes from the reading room: the 1894 tea room with the Belgian mirrors. An early lunch of the empadão or a pastel de camarão and the sweets from the counter, before the office crowd at 12:30 p.m. Closed Sundays; weekdays from 11, Saturdays from 10.
Jardim Botânico · 120 min
Uber from Centro, 25 to 35 minutes. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Tuesday and from 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, last entry an hour before; tickets sell online at jbrj.eleventickets.com and foreign visitors pay more than Brazilians.
Jardim Botânico · 45 min
Ten minutes on foot along Rua Jardim Botânico. The gardens, the aquarium grottoes and the start of the Corcovado trail are free and open daily, roughly 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The mansion with the famous pool courtyard closed for restoration in May 2025 and is due to reopen around April 2027, so the café is shut; the grounds are still worth the half hour.
Urca · 150 min
Uber to Praia Vermelha, 20 minutes. Two cable cars, Urca hill then the Sugarloaf, run daily 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., last boarding 7:30 p.m.; book a timed ticket on bondinho.com.br, about R$205 for the regular adult ticket, and go at 8:30 a.m. if the afternoon looks cloudy.
R$205
Urca · 60 min
Fifteen minutes on foot round the bay to Rua Cândido Gaffrée. Buy a beer and empadas at the counter and sit on the seawall opposite with the fishermen's boats; cash is quicker.
Botafogo · 90 min
Uber ten minutes to the bar streets around Rua Nelson Mandela. Comuna for a burger and craft beer, Meza Bar for small plates and cocktails, Oteque on Rua Conde de Irajá if you booked the tasting menu weeks ago.

From Galeão (GIG), an Uber to Copacabana or Ipanema takes 40 to 70 minutes depending on traffic and costs around R$80 to R$130; the fixed-fare taxi counters in arrivals charge more, roughly R$130 to R$170, and are the fallback at night. The Premium 2018 bus runs along the Zona Sul beaches for about R$20 and takes longer. Santos Dumont (SDU), the domestic airport by the bay, is a 20-minute Uber from Copacabana.
About R$400 to R$600 a day per person with one big ticket each day: Corcovado is R$134, Sugarloaf about R$205, the metro R$7.90 a ride. A kiosk lunch is R$50 to R$80, a sit-down dinner R$120 to R$200 with the 10 percent service, a caipirinha R$20 to R$35.
Plans change. Ask Chat and it proposes a reshuffled day you can apply, or just answers the question.
The Zona Sul and the sights on this plan are fine with the habits locals keep: nothing valuable on the beach, phone away on the street, Uber after dark, no shortcuts through quiet streets or tunnels. Centro empties at night and Lapa needs a car to the door.
Day 3 starts indoors: the reading room, the Confeitaria Colombo and Centro's churches all work in rain, but Sugarloaf is wasted in cloud. Keep Sugarloaf for the clearest evening of the trip, and ask Waystop to save a rain version of day 3 without it.
The train is the experience: 20 minutes through the Tijuca forest, R$134 with the statue. The vans are quicker to book at short notice and cheaper from the Paineiras center (R$87). Either way, book a timed slot and go early.
Yes. The Real Gabinete opens Monday to Friday only and the Confeitaria Colombo in Centro is shut on Sundays. Put the beaches or the mountain on the weekend days and the center on a weekday.
