Staying safe. Carry one card, small notes and a phone you can afford to lose; the rest stays in the hotel safe. Keep the phone in a front pocket, not in your hand. Walk in daylight along the beachfront and the main streets of Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana and Botafogo; after dark take an Uber between parts of the city. Centro empties at night and Lapa needs a car to the door. Do not enter a favela without a guide who lives there. If someone demands the phone, give it.
The bondinho and the train. Sugarloaf’s cable cars run daily 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., last boarding 7:30 p.m.; book a timed ticket on bondinho.com.br, about R$205 for foreign visitors and R$160 for Brazilians. The Corcovado train is R$134 with the statue, timed, on tremdocorcovado.rio; the Cosme Velho station sells no same-day tickets and the cloud rolls in from late morning, so take the first departure. The official vans cost R$132 from Copacabana or R$87 from Paineiras.
Uber and the metro. The metro runs from Centro to Ipanema for R$7.90; tap a contactless bank card at the turnstile. City buses stopped taking cash in June 2026 and want the Jaé card or app; a visitor rarely needs them. Uber is cheap and fills every other gap.
The beaches by posto. Copacabana’s lifeguard postos run 1 to 6, Leme at 1 the quietest; Arpoador is 7. Ipanema’s posto 8 is families and the rainbow flags by Rua Farme de Amoedo, 9 is young and loud, and Leblon’s 11 and 12 are calm. Two chairs and an umbrella cost about R$40 for the afternoon; swim between the flags, because there are rips.
Caipirinhas and the kiosks. Open a tab at a kiosk, order the fried fish or a grilled cheese, and a caipirinha is R$20 to R$35. Count the change and pay before you leave the chair.
Carnival. The five days before Ash Wednesday: February 5 to 10 in 2027, with the Grupo Especial parades on the 7th to the 9th. The blocos, the free street parades, start weeks earlier. Hotels double and the big sights sell out; book by September or come in May.
Money and the tip. Walking sellers and some kiosks take only cash; draw it from a bank-branch or shopping-center ATM by day. The 10 percent serviço on the bill is the tip; nobody expects more.
Before you fly. Book both mountains and keep the QR codes in Waystop’s Documents, where they open offline. If the morning forecast puts cloud on Corcovado, ask Waystop for a rain plan with the botanical garden first and the mountain on a clearer day.
