The best cities for a summer beach break
For travelers who want a real city by day and sand by late afternoon, without a resort. Ordered by how good the beach is and how easily the itinerary reaches it, with the beach each itinerary actually uses named. Four of the ten are in the southern hemisphere, where summer is December to February.
June to September for Athens and Tel Aviv, May to September for Barcelona and Copenhagen, June to October for Los Angeles; December to February for Sydney, Melbourne and Cape Town; December to April for Cancún. Rio swims all year and is driest from May to October.

Cancún
Playa Delfines on day 1 is the one hotel zone beach with no hotel on it, free and lifeguarded with the Cancún sign above it; Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres on day 4 is waist-deep and calm and faces west, so it usually stays clear of sargassum. From roughly April to October the weed washes onto the east-facing beaches, worst in June to August, and hurricane season runs June to November. December to April is the clean, dry season.
