The best cities for a day or two after a conference

For anyone whose badge comes off on Thursday and whose flight home is not until Saturday or Sunday. These are the cities that host the big trade shows and summits, where the exhibition center sits one metro, tram or ferry ride from the itinerary's first day, ordered by how much of the plan a single free day can hold. The business-trip guide covers the bag, the hotel move and the Sunday flight.

The free day after a show is the day the exhibition district empties, so move to the itinerary's neighborhood that evening. European museums mostly close on Mondays, so a Monday stopover leans on the walking days.

  1. Singapore · Singapore · 3 days

    Singapore

Marina Bay Sands' convention center and Suntec both sit inside day 1: the Gardens by the Bay domes are a 10-minute walk from the Sands halls, the National Gallery and Lau Pa Sat about 15 minutes from Suntec, and the evening light shows are at your door. With one free day do day 1; with two add day 2, the hawker centers and temples from Tiong Bahru to Little India, each a short MRT ride apart. The Botanic Gardens on day 3 open at 5 a.m., which suits an early flight morning.

    Hong Kong

The Convention and Exhibition Centre is on the Wan Chai harbourfront, one MTR stop or a tram ride from day 1's Man Mo Temple and Tai Kwun, and the Peak Tram at dusk ends the day. With one free day do day 1; with two add day 2, taking the Star Ferry from the Wan Chai pier beside the center straight across to Tsim Sha Tsui for M+ and the night market. AsiaWorld-Expo is the other venue, out by the airport, and from there the Lantau day 3 is the natural half day.

  3. Toronto · Canada · 3 days

    Toronto

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre stands on Front Street with the CN Tower, day 1's first stop, behind it and Union Station across the road, so the first day needs no ride at all until the Distillery District. With one free day do day 1; with two add day 2, the west end, on the 501 or 504 streetcar from the same corner. The UP Express leaves Union for Pearson every 15 minutes and takes 28, which makes a Sunday noon flight realistic.

  4. Barcelona · Spain · 3 days

    Barcelona

Fira Montjuïc at Plaça Espanya puts day 3 on the doorstep: MNAC is up the steps behind the halls and the Miró foundation a bus or cable car above it, while Fira Gran Via, the Mobile World Congress site in L'Hospitalet, is about 20 minutes from the same square on the L9 Sud or FGC. With one free day do day 1, the Gaudí day, by metro from Plaça Espanya to Sagrada Família with one change; with two add day 3 if you sat at Fira Montjuïc, or day 2 in the old town if you did not. Book Sagrada Família and Park Güell before the show starts; both sell out days ahead.

  5. Amsterdam · Netherlands · 3 days

    Amsterdam

RAI Amsterdam sits on the Zuidas, and metro 52 from Europaplein beside the halls reaches De Pijp in about five minutes, with the Museumplein a 15-minute walk or a tram from there, so day 1's Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Albert Cuypmarkt are the obvious free day; book the Van Gogh slot before the show. With two days add day 2, Anne Frank House and the Jordaan, with the house booked six weeks ahead, or take the 16-minute train to Haarlem instead. The Zuidas empties on the weekend, so sleep in De Pijp, which is on the walk home.

  6. Dubai · United Arab Emirates · 3 days

    Dubai

The Dubai World Trade Centre, where GITEX runs, has its own Red Line station two stops from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, so day 2, the Burj, the mall, the Opera District and the fountain, is the free day and most of it is indoors. With two days add day 1, old Dubai, by changing to the Green Line at BurJuman for the souks and the abra across the Creek. Expo City Dubai, the other big venue, is at the far southern end of the Red Line, roughly an hour from Downtown, so from there do day 3's Marina evening instead.

Messe Berlin and the CityCube in Westend, home of ITB and IFA, have the S-Bahn at Messe Nord/ICC and Messe Süd, about 20 minutes to Hauptbahnhof or Brandenburger Tor, where day 1's gate, dome and Museum Island begin; book the Reichstag dome a week ahead. With one free day do day 1; with two add day 2, Alcatraz and the bridge, which needs the Alcatraz boat booked weeks ahead, often before the conference is on your calendar. 9. Chicago · United States · 3 days

    Chicago

McCormick Place is on the lake south of the Loop, with Metra from the hall's own station to Millennium Station in about 10 minutes, though trains thin out off-peak, or bus 3 up Michigan Avenue, and the Museum Campus a 20-minute walk north along the shore. With one free day do day 1, the river cruise, Millennium Park and the Art Institute; with two add day 3, which starts at the Field or the Shedd between the halls and the Loop and ends in the West Loop's restaurants. Day 2's north side needs the L and is the one to drop.

    London

ExCeL London is in the Royal Docks, with the Elizabeth line at Custom House reaching Liverpool Street in about 15 minutes and the DLR running to Tower Gateway, so day 2, the Tower, St Paul's, the Sky Garden and the City pubs, is the free day; book the Sky Garden slot, which is free, a week ahead. With two days add day 1, Westminster and the South Bank, or the Greenwich half of day 4, which is across the river from the halls by the IFS Cloud cable car and a short bus. Olympia in Kensington is the other venue, and from there day 3's South Kensington museums are one bus ride.

Questions

What about Lisbon and Copenhagen?

Both work. Lisbon's Web Summit halls at Parque das Nações are one suburban train from Oriente to Santa Apolónia, at the foot of Alfama where day 1 starts; Copenhagen's Bella Center is four stops on the M1 metro from Christianshavn and the old city of days 1 and 2. They are good too; there are just fewer big shows there.

Should I stay in the conference hotel for the free days?

No. The Zuidas, the Royal Docks, Westend and the blocks around McCormick Place empty when the halls shut and the restaurants with them. Check out on the last show morning, leave the case at the desk, and take two nights where the itinerary sleeps: De Pijp, Shoreditch or the South Bank, Prenzlauer Berg, North Beach.

Which day of the itinerary is best for one free day?

The walking day that starts nearest the halls and needs no booking you might have missed. In Singapore, Hong Kong, Toronto and San Francisco that is day 1; in Dubai and London it is day 2; in Chicago day 1 with day 3 as the second. Ask Chat for a rain plan and it builds a second version of the day with indoor stops, which you can switch to from the day's menu.
