The best cities for a long weekend
For a Friday-to-Monday or a three-day holiday weekend, when the question is which city fits the time rather than which deserves longer. Two-day trips first, then three-day cities that are small enough to walk and close enough to an airport to lose nothing to transfers.
Spring and fall for all of them; Lisbon and Porto also work in winter, and Copenhagen, Edinburgh and Dublin in June for the long light.
Checked October 10, 2026. Every city links to a day-by-day itinerary with the hours and prices looked up.
- Milan · Italy · 2 days
Milan
Two days is the right length: the Duomo rooftop, La Scala's museum and Brera on day 1; the Last Supper, booked weeks ahead, the castle and an aperitivo on the Navigli on day 2. The Duomo to Brera is 15 minutes on foot and the metro caps at €7.60 a day. Avoid the Salone in mid-April and the fashion weeks, when hotel prices jump.

- Venice · Italy · 2 days
Venice
Two days, one for Rialto, San Marco and the bacari, one for Dorsoduro, Murano and Burano and the Ghetto. The island crosses in 40 minutes on foot; a 24-hour vaporetto pass is €25 and a traghetto crossing €2. April to June and September to October for light and bearable crowds; the city is full by 10 a.m. and empties by 6 p.m., so sleep on the island.

Doha
Two days and built for a stopover: Souq Waqif in the evening, the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum by day, the Corniche and Katara at dusk. The metro links the airport, the souq and the museums for a few riyals. November to March is the window.

- Porto · Portugal · 3 days
Porto
Three days at €55 to €85 a day: the Sé and Ribeira, the port lodges across the bridge in Gaia, tram 1 to the sea at Foz, Lello and Bolhão. The center is small and steep and an Andante card makes every ride €1.40. May, June and September are warm and dry; a francesinha is about €12.

- Copenhagen · Denmark · 3 days
Copenhagen
A short flight from most of Europe and a city that is three walks and a bike ride: Nyhavn and the towers, Christianshavn and the harbor bath, Louisiana by train. Cards everywhere, English everywhere, the metro all night. Tivoli at the end of day 1 is the long weekend's evening.

- Edinburgh · United Kingdom · 3 days
Edinburgh
Walkable, steep and three days exactly: the Castle to Holyrood, Arthur's Seat and the New Town and Leith, Calton Hill at sunrise and the Botanics. The museums and galleries are free, so the tickets are the Castle at £23.50 and Holyrood at £22. May, June and September; expect much higher prices in August.

- Dublin · Ireland · 3 days
Dublin
Friday to Monday fits the plan: Trinity and the Green, Guinness and Kilmainham, the DART to Howth for the cliff walk and back for a last pint at the Cobblestone. A Leap Visitor Card is €18 for three days and the center is two kilometers across. It rains in every month, in short showers, so the pubs are part of the plan.

- Prague · Czech Republic · 3 days
Prague
Three days at 1,800 to 2,800 Kč a day: Old Town and Charles Bridge at dusk, the castle and Malá Strana, Vyšehrad and a beer garden. Everything on days 1 and 2 is on foot and tram 22 does the rest for 46 Kč a ride. May, June and September are the mild months; December has the markets.

- Lisbon · Portugal · 3 days
Lisbon
Three days at €60 to €90 a day with one day trip built in: Alfama and the castle, Belém and the river, the train to Sintra from Rossio. Winter is mild and often sunny, so this works in February when most of Europe does not. Trams and metros are €1.80 with a Viva Viagem card.

- Budapest · Hungary · 3 days
Budapest
Three days and a 72-hour travelcard at 5,750 Ft that matches them: Buda and a Turkish bath, Pest and the Jewish Quarter, Széchenyi at opening and tram 2 along the Danube at dusk. Around €75 to €115 a day with the expensive tickets spread across the days. April to June and September to October; in winter the outdoor pools steam.

Questions
Is two days enough for Venice or Milan?
Yes, if you sleep in the center and start early. Venice's day-trippers arrive at 10 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m., so the two evenings are the point; Milan's two days hold the Duomo, Brera and the Last Supper if the slot is booked.
Which long weekend city is cheapest?
Porto at €55 to €85 a day, then Lisbon and Prague. Venice and Milan are the expensive ones at €100 to €150, and Copenhagen is 700 to 1,100 kr.
What about Montreal and Chicago?
Both have three-day itineraries that fit a long weekend from the east of North America: Montreal's metro covers the whole plan for C$21.75 and Chicago's Loop is flat and on the L. They are left off only because the flight from Europe is too long for a three-day trip.
