3 days in Hanoi

Three days at walking pace: the Old Quarter's 36 streets with an egg coffee and a bowl of bun cha, Ba Dinh and the Temple of Literature before a West Lake sunset, then the Ethnology Museum and a ceramics village. Grab for the long hops and your feet for the rest.

When to go

October to November and March to April are the months to come: dry, 77 to 86°F (25 to 30°C), blue sky most days. December to February is the damp cold, 57 to 68°F (14 to 20°C) with a fine drizzle that hangs for days and unheated rooms that feel colder than the number. May to September is hot and wet; June highs reach 95°F (35°C) with afternoon storms, and August is the wettest month at around 270 mm. Avoid Tet (late January or February), when the city empties and shops shut for a week.

Where to base yourself

Sleep in the Old Quarter if you want to walk out of the door into it and can sleep through motorbikes; the streets south of Hoan Kiem Lake around Ly Thuong Kiet and the cathedral are the same walk with quieter nights. Tay Ho on West Lake is calm and full of cafés but 15 to 20 minutes by Grab from everything on this plan.

Getting around

Walk the Old Quarter and the lake; it is all within a kilometer. For everything else use Grab, which prices the ride in the app so there is nothing to argue about: a GrabBike across the center is around ₫20,000 to ₫40,000 and a car ₫50,000 to ₫100,000. City buses are a few thousand dong a ride and slow. The two metro lines do not yet reach anything on this plan.

    Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

    Hoan Kiem · 60 min

  6. 3
    12:00–13:00 · afternoon

    Long Bien Bridge on foot

    Long Bien · 60 min

Bus 47A from the Long Bien bus station reaches the kiln village in 30 to 40 minutes for ₫7,000. The spiral Pottery Museum (₫60,000) is the landmark, and the workshops let you throw a pot for around ₫70,000; in a hurry or the rain, the Women's Museum at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet (₫40,000) is the swap.

    ₫60,000

  9. 9.1 km · transit or taxi
  10. 5
    18:30–19:30 · dinner

    Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su

The practical bits

From the airport

From Noi Bai (HAN), 27 km north, bus 86 runs to Hanoi railway station by way of Long Bien and the edge of the Old Quarter for ₫45,000; about 50 minutes, roughly 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with luggage racks. A taxi or Grab car is ₫300,000 to ₫400,000 and 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic; use the official taxi line or the Grab pick-up point, not the men inside the terminal.

What a day costs

About ₫500,000 to ₫900,000 a day per person for meals, tickets and Grab rides. Street meals are ₫40,000 to ₫90,000, museum tickets ₫40,000 to ₫70,000 and a bia hoi glass a few thousand dong. Hotel-restaurant dinners and the water puppets' best seats push it toward the top.

Worth knowing

Things you can ask once it’s in the app

Plans change. Ask Chat and it proposes a reshuffled day you can apply, or just answers the question.

The mausoleum is closed on our Friday, how do we rework day 2?Where near Hang Manh can someone who doesn't eat pork get bun cha?How do we get from the Ethnology Museum to Long Bien Bridge?Rain all day tomorrow, what do we do instead of Bat Trang?Could we add an overnight Ha Long cruise and shift day 3?

Questions

Is three days enough for Hanoi?

Enough for the Old Quarter, Ba Dinh and one day further out at a walking pace. A fourth day buys Ninh Binh; a fifth and sixth, an overnight cruise in Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay.

Which day works in the rain?

Day 3: the Ethnology Museum is mostly indoors and the Women's Museum swaps in for Bat Trang. Hoa Lo and the water puppets are dry too; Waystop's rain plan for the day is a second version you can flip to when the forecast turns.

Is Hanoi safe to walk at night?

Yes. The risks are traffic, uneven sidewalks and bag snatches from passing motorbikes; keep your phone off the curb side and walk with the flow.

Do I need cash?

Yes, for street food, temple tickets, bia hoi and buses. Cards work in hotels, bigger restaurants and the museums' gift shops. Withdraw ₫2,000,000 to ₫3,000,000 at a bank ATM and break the big notes early.
