The best cities for Christmas markets
For anyone planning a December city break around the stalls, the lights and a mug of something hot. These are the cities where the market sits on the itinerary's own route, ordered by how good the market is and how well the three days work around it in the cold. Dates are for the 2026 season where the organizers have published them.
Most markets open in the second or third week of November and close on December 24; Prague, Edinburgh, Montreal and Tivoli run into the first week of January, and Vienna runs to December 26. The weekend before Christmas is the busiest; a weekday afternoon in early December is the quiet one.
