For September to November, when the summer crowds have gone and the trees do the work. Ordered by how good the season is in the city, from Kyoto's maples to Munich's Oktoberfest, with one southern city where the same months are spring.

Late September and early October for Montreal, Vancouver and Munich; October for Seoul, Prague, Istanbul and Edinburgh; late October to mid-November for New York and Kyoto. Buenos Aires is in its spring from September to November.

Checked October 10, 2026. Every city links to a day-by-day itinerary with the hours and prices looked up.

  1. Kyoto · Japan · 3 days

    Kyoto

Mid-November is koyo, the maple season, and the itinerary already visits the best of it: Tofuku-ji's Tsutenkyo bridge over the maple valley on day 3, Tenryu-ji and the Arashiyama riverbank on day 2, Kiyomizu-dera's stage over the color on day 1. Book the Nijo Castle timed entry in maple weeks. It is the second-busiest season after blossom, so October is the calm alternative.

Mont-Tremblant, an hour and a half north, is the day trip for the color.

The next Oktoberfest runs from September 18 to October 3, 2027: free to enter, tents packed by noon on weekends, hotels two or three times the normal rate. Come on purpose or avoid it on purpose. 8. Istanbul · Turkey · 4 days

    Istanbul

Mid-September to October is one of the two windows the itinerary names: 61 to 77°F (16 to 25°C), dry enough, long evenings on the ferries to Üsküdar and Kadıköy. The Sultanahmet lines shrink from their August length and the meyhane terraces are still outdoors. December is the rainiest month, so do not push it later.

  9. Edinburgh · United Kingdom · 3 days

    Edinburgh

September, not August: the festivals have packed up, the Castle slots are open again, hotel prices drop well below August levels and the city is still light until 8 p.m. October has color in the Botanics and on Arthur's Seat and short lines everywhere. The Palm Houses reopened on October 2, 2026 with timed tickets at £5.50.

  10. Buenos Aires · Argentina · 3 days

    Buenos Aires

September to November is Buenos Aires's spring: 59 to 77°F (15 to 25°C), mild for walking Palermo and San Telmo, the roses out in El Rosedal from October and the jacarandas purple across the city in November. It is the opposite season to Europe and North America, so it is a warm escape from their fall. Tango in a milonga on day 3 is the same in any month.

Questions

When is the maple season in Kyoto?

Mid-November most years, running into early December at the lower temples. Book the hotel early and start at the temples when they open.

Should I go to Munich during Oktoberfest?

Only if the Wiesn is the point. The festival is free, the tents are full by noon on weekends, and hotels charge two or three times the normal rate for the sixteen days: September 18 to October 3 in 2027.

Why September rather than August in Edinburgh?

August is the Fringe, the International Festival and the Tattoo: wonderful if you came for shows, hard work if you did not, with hotel prices far higher and the Royal Mile a slow river of people. September has the same city at half the density.
