4 days in Delhi and Agra

Four days split by city: Old Delhi's fort, mosque and spice market by rickshaw, New Delhi's Mughal tombs and gardens, a day in Agra on the Gatimaan Express for the Taj, then temples, crafts and a gurdwara kitchen. The Metro does the long hops.

When to go

October to March is the season. November to January brings the worst air of the year and dense morning fog that delays trains and flights, so February and early March are the sweet spot. April to June is 104°F (40°C) and more; July to September is the monsoon, humid with afternoon downpours.

Where to base yourself

Connaught Place or Janpath for the Metro hub and the airport line; Lodhi Colony, Nizamuddin East or Defence Colony for leafy, quiet and near the tombs; Hauz Khas for cafés and nightlife. Paharganj is cheap and beside New Delhi station but loud. Aerocity only for an early flight.

Getting around

The Metro is clean, cheap and air-conditioned: single journeys run about ₹10 to ₹60 by QR ticket or token, and a tourist card costs around ₹200 for a day or ₹500 for three days with ₹50 refundable (not valid on the Airport Express). The first coach of every train is women only. Uber and Ola work well; use the prepaid booth for a taxi or auto at any station and agree the fare before an auto ride elsewhere.

The practical bits

From the airport

From Indira Gandhi International (DEL), the Airport Express Metro runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station in about 20 minutes for around ₹60, with a shuttle from Terminal 1. The prepaid taxi counter in arrivals or an Uber from the signed pickup point takes 45 to 90 minutes to the center depending on traffic. Fog in December and January can delay flights by hours.

What a day costs

About ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 a day per person for meals, monument tickets and the Metro; foreigner tickets at ₹600 a monument are the biggest line. The Agra day costs ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 with the train and the ₹1,300 Taj ticket.

Questions

Is one day enough for Agra?

Yes, with the Gatimaan. Taj, lunch, fort and Mehtab Bagh fit between 9:50 a.m. and sunset. Stay a night only if you want the Taj at sunrise or Fatehpur Sikri.

Which day works in the rain?

Day 4: Akshardham's exhibitions, Dilli Haat's covered stalls and the National Museum are all under roofs. A rain plan in Waystop puts museums in place of Lodhi Garden and India Gate as a second version of the day.

Do I need to book the Taj Mahal ahead?

Buy the ticket online at asi.payumoney.com the day before; it saves ₹50 and the counter line. Book the Gatimaan train a few weeks out, since it sells out on winter weekends.

Is Delhi safe to get around alone?

By day, yes, with the normal city care. Use the Metro (women travel in the first coach), Uber or prepaid taxis after dark rather than hailed autos, and keep valuables out of sight in Chandni Chowk.
