The best cities for a trip with small kids
For parents traveling with a stroller and a child who walks for twenty minutes and then does not. These are the cities whose itineraries already ride ferries and trams, pass an aquarium or a science museum and finish dinner early, ranked by how little you have to change. Each entry names the easy day and the one stop to drop; the packing list for a city trip with small kids covers the rest.
School vacations decide most of it, so these are the weeks inside them: Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo from June to August for the harbor swims and light until ten; Sydney and Melbourne from December to February, with the UV at extreme by late morning; Singapore in any month with the walking done before 10 a.m.; Valencia and Osaka in the Easter and October breaks, when both are mild.

Copenhagen
Flat, paved and built for wheels, with under 18s free at almost every museum. Day 1 is the easy one: Nyhavn's canal boat for an hour on the water (135 to 200 kr.), the Round Tower's spiral ramp that a stroller rolls up with no steps until the last few, the free elevator up the Christiansborg tower, lunch at Torvehallerne and Tivoli at 6 p.m. with a ride wristband at about 270 to 300 kr. Skip the Church of Our Saviour on day 2, 400 steps with the last 150 outside on the spire, and swim at Islands Brygge instead, where the harbor bath has lifeguards from June to August; Danish kitchens start dinner around 6 p.m., which is your hour anyway.

Water does the work: the Aquabus takes five minutes across False Creek to Granville Island and Lee's Donuts, the SeaBus is a twelve-minute ferry on the same tap, and the Skyride takes you to Grouse's summit to see Grinder and Coola, the two grizzlies, from about mid-April to mid-November. Day 3 is the easy one in summer: the 137-meter saltwater pool on Kitsilano Beach, open June 17 to September 13 in 2026, then the Museum of Anthropology's Great Hall and a slice at Mercante. Skip the Grouse Grind, 800 meters of stairs, and ride up instead; skip the Wreck Beach steps and take the Nitobe garden, five minutes from the museum.

Valencia
Day 2 is the easy one and a very good day for a four-year-old: the Turia gardens are a 9-kilometer park in the old riverbed with the Gulliver playground on the way to the Oceanogràfic, one of Europe's largest aquariums, where the shark tunnel and the Arctic dome come before the school groups at the 10 a.m. opening, then paella on the beach at Casa Carmela at 2 p.m. and Malvarrosa's wide sand. The three-venue ticket (€46 to €51, less for children of 4 to 12) is valid over three consecutive days, so the Science Museum keeps for a rainy hour, and day 3's electric boat on the Albufera is €7 and silent. Skip the Miguelete's 207 steps on day 1 and the 8:30 p.m. Ruzafa tapas crawl; La Pilareta at lunch does the same food standing at the bar.

Questions
Which day is the easy one?
Day 1 in Copenhagen, Singapore and Stockholm; day 2 in Valencia, Sydney, Chicago and Oslo; day 3 in Vancouver, Osaka and Melbourne. Each is one ride and a lot of sitting down, so put it on the day after the flight.
Do children pay?
Rarely for museums: under 18s are free at almost every museum in Copenhagen and Stockholm, at the Vasa and the MCA in Sydney, at the Melbourne Museum (16 and under) and the Art Institute of Chicago (under 14). The aquariums charge, with a child of 4 to 12 on Valencia's three-venue ticket at about €35 to €40. Sydney and Melbourne only give child fares through an Opal or myki card; a bank-card tap pays the adult rate.
Which stops should we skip?
Anything with steps and a line: the Church of Our Saviour spire in Copenhagen, the Miguelete in Valencia, the Opera House tour in Sydney (300 steps), the City Hall tower in Stockholm, the Grouse Grind in Vancouver. And anything after 8 p.m.: Dotonbori after dark, the Ruzafa crawl, Kødbyen's bars. Ask Chat to drop a stop and it proposes a reordered day you can apply.
