Packing list for Croatia and Slovenia
What to bring for Dubrovnik, Split, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Lake Bled from May to October: water shoes for stone beaches and sea urchins, a hat and two liters of water for the walls at 86°F (30°C), a layer for the bura and the Alpine evenings, and euros, which Croatia has used since 2023.
On a phone with Waystop installed, the button adds the list to your trip as a bag you can tick off. Otherwise copy it and paste it into Waystop’s Chat with “add this to my packing list”.

Dubrovnik averages 70°F (21°C) in May, 82°F (28°C) in July and August and 70°F (21°C) in October, with the sea at 66°F (19°C) in May, 77°F (25°C) in July and August and 70°F (21°C) in October; July has under 30 mm of rain and October over 120 mm. Split runs a degree or two warmer. Ljubljana reaches 82°F (28°C) in July and August but drops to 61°F (16°C) at night and takes about 120 mm of rain in each summer month; Bled, at 500 meters, is cooler still, and October afternoons in Ljubljana are around 61°F (16°C).
- Flip-flops as your only sandalsThey slide on wet pebbles and stop nothing from an urchin; water shoes or rubber-soled sandals do both jobs
- Kuna or a stash of foreign cashCroatia switched to the euro in 2023, so old kuna are worthless. Use bank ATMs, not the Euronet boxes, for fair rates.
- A big beach umbrellaBeaches rent them, the bura would take it, and it will not fit in a Jadrolinija locker
- The Jadrolinija appIt shows cancellations when the bura blows. A screenshot of the timetable is your backup.
- Sunscreen and after-sunCroatian pharmacies (ljekarna) and Slovenian ones (lekarna) are everywhere and the prices are normal, unlike the beach kiosks
- Water and snacks for ferry daysSupermarkets near the ports in Split and Dubrovnik charge less than the quay kiosks.
Worth knowing
- Walk Dubrovnik's walls at opening or in the last hour before close; the cruise crowds arrive mid-morning and the limestone is 104°F (40°C) underfoot by 1 p.m.
- Check the wind forecast the night before any ferry or island day. A bura warning means the morning boat may not run and the Adriatic turns cold and choppy. Ask Waystop's Chat to swap in a city day and it proposes the new order as a card you can apply.
- Plitvice and Vintgar both sell entry by time slot online; book the earliest slot, start at Entrance 1 at Plitvice for the Big Waterfall first, and bring food, as there is little inside either.
Trips to pack this for
Never leave the charger in the hotel again.
Waystop keeps a list for each bag and each person. On the morning you change hotels it walks you through a quick pack-up check, and Chat can suggest items to add when you ask what to bring.
