What the weather is like

Depends on the city; the same nine pieces work from 41°F (5°C) to 86°F (30°C) by swapping the layer for a coat you wear on the plane. Check the forecast the night before and move the heaviest item onto your body.

Paris

Four days that pair one big museum or palace with one part of the city: the Louvre and the islands, Orsay and Saint-Germain, Montmartre and the Marais, then Versailles and a last evening on the Seine. Each day is a short metro ride and a lot of walking, with dinner booked.

Rome

Three days split by ground: ancient Rome in the morning before the heat, the Vatican in one committed visit, and a third day for the fountains, the Borghese gallery, the Aventine and the Testaccio and Trastevere dinners. Most of it is on foot, with a few metro or bus rides.

Amsterdam

Three days on foot and by free ferry: the two big museums, the park and De Pijp; Anne Frank and the Jordaan; then across the IJ to Noord's film museum and the NDSM wharf. Book the Van Gogh slot and the Anne Frank release before anything else.

Berlin

Three days, three districts: Mitte from the Brandenburg Gate to Museum Island, Kreuzberg from the painted Wall to a currywurst on Mehringdamm, then the real Wall at Bernauer Strasse and a Prenzlauer Berg beer garden. Register for the Reichstag dome first.

Prague

Three days that take the old city before the crowds, the castle and its hill, and then the parts of Prague where people actually live: Vyšehrad, Vinohrady and a beer garden with the bridges below. One tram ride a day and the rest on foot.

Madrid

Three days in the center: the Prado and the Retiro, the Palace and the Habsburg squares with a La Latina tavern night, then Guernica, Malasaña and a Chueca tapas crawl. Lunch at 2 p.m., dinner at 9 p.m., and the metro on your bank card.

Porto

Three days along the river: the cathedral and Ribeira with the bridge at dusk, the port lodges in Gaia and the old tram out to Foz, then the bookshop, the tower and the market before a francesinha. One ride a day, the rest on foot and uphill.

Florence

3 days in Florence

Three days in a city you cross on foot in half an hour: the Duomo and the old center, the Uffizi and the Oltrarno with Piazzale Michelangelo at dusk, then David, the San Lorenzo market and Fiesole for sunset. Book three timed slots before you fly.
