Packing list for Europe in fall
Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna and Munich from September to November: 46°F (8°C) at breakfast and 68°F (20°C) by lunch on the same day, rain that arrives sideways, wet cobbles, a sun that sets before five by the end, and a beer tent in a sweater.
On a phone with Waystop installed, the button adds the list to your trip as a bag you can tick off. Otherwise copy it and paste it into Waystop’s Chat with “add this to my packing list”.

September afternoons sit at 66 to 72°F (19 to 22°C) across all five cities with nights at 50 to 57°F (10 to 14°C). October runs 57 to 61°F (14 to 16°C) by day and 45 to 50°F (7 to 10°C) at night, with Amsterdam wettest at around 87 mm over 12 wet days. November drops to 46 to 52°F (8 to 11°C) by day and 36 to 43°F (2 to 6°C) at night, with the first frosts in Vienna, Prague and Munich and Paris down to about 70 hours of sun for the month. Munich's föhn wind can lift a day to 64°F (18°C) out of nowhere.
- A heavy winter coatNothing in fall needs it, and the trams and museums run at 72°F (22°C); three layers do the job and pack smaller
- Suede or canvas shoesOne wet morning on Prague cobbles and they are finished for the trip
- ShortsEven a 72°F (22°C) September afternoon ends at 54°F (12°C), and you will feel underdressed at the Vienna Opera
- An umbrellaEvery Monoprix, HEMA and dm sells a decent folding one for under €15 on the first wet morning
- A pair of wool gloves in NovemberChristmas-market stalls and department stores sell them for a few euros once the first frost arrives; you will not need them before
- Bavarian dress for the Oktoberfest tents, if you want itMunich department stores sell a passable dirndl or lederhosen from about €100 in September. Locals wear it; visitors in jeans are let in anyway.
Worth knowing
- Dress for a 22°F swing. September still reaches 68 to 72°F (20 to 22°C) in Paris, Vienna and Prague by afternoon but falls to 54°F (12°C) at night; by November the afternoon is 48 to 52°F (9 to 11°C) and the morning near 39°F (4°C). Start the day in all three layers, carry the shell, and expect to be down to one layer by 2 p.m. on a sunny day.
- Oktoberfest runs for about two weeks from mid-September into early October, and Munich hotels double or triple their prices. The Wachau and Mosel wine villages hold harvest festivals through October and the first Christmas markets open in the last week of November. If your trip overlaps, book the hotel first and the tent reservation second.
- An umbrella works in Paris and Vienna, where rain falls straight down; a hooded shell is better in Amsterdam and anywhere you cycle. Carry the shell every day from October onward and buy a cheap umbrella locally if the forecast turns calm and wet.
Trips to pack this for
Never leave the charger in the hotel again.
Waystop keeps a list for each bag and each person. On the morning you change hotels it walks you through a quick pack-up check, and Chat can suggest items to add when you ask what to bring.
