Two nights, one bag under the seat · Any season

Packing list for a two-night city break

Friday to Sunday in Milan, Venice, Copenhagen or Amsterdam with one bag under the seat: the dimensions the budget airlines actually measure, two outfits that share one pair of shoes, toiletries small enough that the liquids rule stops mattering, and the sweater everyone forgets.

Open in Waystop

On a phone with Waystop installed, the button adds the list to your trip as a bag you can tick off. Otherwise copy it and paste it into Waystop’s Chat with “add this to my packing list”.

What the weather is like

Milan and Venice run from 37°F (3°C) in January to 86°F (30°C) in July, with a drop of about 18°F (10°C) from afternoon to evening in spring and fall; Copenhagen tops out around 70°F (21°C) in July and is under 50°F (10°C) in the evening for most of the year; Amsterdam is 41°F (5°C) in winter, 72°F (22°C) in summer and wet on about half the days of any month. The sweater and the sunglasses are both right.

Leave at home
  • A wheeled caseThe free bag goes under the seat and a wheeled case does not; a cabin case costs extra on every budget airline and gets tagged into the hold when the bins are full
  • A hair dryer or styling toolsThe hotel has a dryer; one set of tongs is a third of the bag and a liquid-bag-sized worry at security for no reason
  • A second pair of shoesTwo days, one pair; if it is raining in Venice you wanted sneakers anyway
Buy when you land
  • Anything over 100 mlPharmacies and supermarkets in every city sell it. Buy it on arrival and leave it on the shelf in the room.
  • A 24-hour transit ticketMilan, Copenhagen and Amsterdam sell them at machines, and two nights rarely need more.
  • A bottle of water, after securityFill a soft bottle at the fountain if there is one; otherwise two euros airside beats a confiscated one.

Never leave the charger in the hotel again.

Waystop keeps a list for each bag and each person. On the morning you change hotels it walks you through a quick pack-up check, and Chat can suggest items to add when you ask what to bring.
