Packing list for a business trip with a free day
Three nights of meetings and a weekend on the end, all in one carry-on: a jacket that comes out of the bag wearable, three shirts and a hotel laundry slip, one charger for everything, a second pair of shoes that works at the table and on the free day, and the swimwear you will regret leaving behind.
On a phone with Waystop installed, the button adds the list to your trip as a bag you can tick off. Otherwise copy it and paste it into Waystop’s Chat with “add this to my packing list”.

Meeting rooms are 70°F (21°C) everywhere, which is the point of the jacket. Outside, New York runs from 27°F (-3°C) in January to 86°F (30°C) in July, London rains on about one day in three in any month, Singapore sits at 88°F (31°C) and 80 percent humidity all year, and Tokyo swings from 41°F (5°C) in January to 91°F (33°C) in August. Pack for the room and wear the coat on the plane.
- A hanging garment bagMost airlines count it as a second carry-on bag; a jacket folded flat in the carry-on travels better and nobody has to find a hook
- A second suitThree days of meetings is one jacket and two pairs of pants; the laundry slip replaces the second suit
- Printed decks and a folder of agendasThey are on the laptop and the phone; the one piece of paper that earns its place is the receipts envelope
- An umbrellaLondon and Tokyo sell a decent one on every corner the moment it rains, for a few pounds or around ¥600
- A tie, socks or a shirt you forgotDepartment stores near every business district open by 10 a.m.; Uniqlo in Tokyo and Marks and Spencer in London fix a missing item in fifteen minutes
- Toiletries over 100 mlThe hotel has shampoo and soap; a pharmacy sells the rest on day one and the bottle stays behind
Worth knowing
- Pack the jacket last and flat, over everything else, and take it out first in the room. If it creases anyway, hang it in the bathroom and run the hottest shower for ten minutes with the door closed.
- Hand laundry in on the second morning, not the last. Most business hotels return it the same evening if it is in by 9 a.m.; weekends and holidays are slower, and a shirt that comes back on Monday is no use on Sunday's flight.
- Keep the free day light. Leave the laptop bag in the safe, carry a phone and a card, and put the day's plan in Waystop so the walk, the lunch and the pool fit before the airport.
Trips to pack this for
Never leave the charger in the hotel again.
Waystop keeps a list for each bag and each person. On the morning you change hotels it walks you through a quick pack-up check, and Chat can suggest items to add when you ask what to bring.
